Course Description:

“Broadening the Scope of Dysphagia Treatment” is a course designed to dive into practical dysphagia treatment techniques. The presenter discusses the dysphagia evaluation process, cranial nerve exams and dysphagia imaging, selection of current evidence-based treatment options, the importance of a team approach and how to make necessary referrals, dysphagia documentation standards, and more. Participants will navigate 25 actual patient case studies from SNR’s regional swallowing center, determining an appropriate treatment plan for each based on the assessment findings provided. The presenter will then discuss each patient’s actual treatment details and their outcomes. The goal is for participants to leave this course with a better understanding of how to immediately apply current evidence-based dysphagia treatments with their caseloads.

Course Format:

This course is an 8.5-hour recorded course that participants can complete at their own pace. There is a case study worksheet that is completed as each patient’s case is presented where participants list a few treatment ideas before the actual outcomes are given.  This worksheet is returned along with a course survey  for course participation credit.

Expected Learner Outcomes:

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • summarize current evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques for dysphagia from various etiologies

  • identify appropriate treatment modalities based on clinical presentation, physiological impairments as defined via imaging, current research, and patient preferences

  • practice a team approach when treating dysphagia and determine when referrals to other disciplines (e.g., ENT, GI, etc.) are needed

  • Video 2: (66 minutes) Instrumental Exams, Reviewing Findings with Patient, Determining a Treatment Plan, Current Evidence-Based Treatments, Diet Consistency Modifications

  • Video 3: (36 minutes) Special Considerations (progressive diseases, PEG tubes etc.), Patient Resources

  • Video 4: (57 minutes) Case Studies 1-3

  • Video 5: (67 minutes) Case Studies 4-8

  • Video 6: (68 minutes) Cases Studies 9- 12

  • Video 7: (63 minutes) Case Studies 13- 17

  • Video 8: (57 minutes) Case Studies 18- 22

  • Video 9: (49 minutes) Case Studies 23- 25, Dysphagia Documentation Tips

Target Audience: This course is intended for speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants, or graduate students in speech-language pathology who treat or have an interest in learning about adult dysphagia. 

Course Completion Requirements: To receive course participation credit, participants must submit the case study worksheet and a course survey upon completion of the course. Additional credits will not be awarded if participants take longer to complete the course than the video run time and the expected completion time of 8.5 hours.

Course Offering Dates: February 1, 2020- February 28, 2022 and April 1, 2022- February 28, 2025

Cancellation Policies for Online Courses:

If a self-study course is cancelled or removed by SNR before completion by the participant, the participant will be refunded for the course. No cancellations or refunds are permitted by a participant for online/self-study courses. Once a participant has registered for and paid for an online/ self-study course, no refunds will be issued. The participant has until the course end date specified for that course to return the required items to receive course completion credit.

Speaker Bio:

Tiffany Turner is a board certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders. She founded Swallowing and Neurological Rehabilitation in 2014. Tiffany and her team perform FEES and videostroboscopy exams and provide highly specialized treatment services for individuals throughout the region. She has also authored several clinical resources which have been utilized by thousands of SLPs worldwide and teaches several adult medical SLP continuing education courses.
