Voice Treatment

Struggling with vocal fatigue, hoarseness, chronic throat clearing, or feeling like you constantly have to repeat yourself? At Swallowing and Neurological Rehabilitation (SNR), we provide advanced voice evaluation and rehabilitation to address disorders of vocal loudness, pitch, endurance, quality, and airway function, helping you regain clarity, confidence, and control in your voice.

Advanced Voice Evaluation

SNR offers state-of-the-art videostroboscopy voice evaluations using both flexible and rigid endoscopy to provide a detailed, dynamic assessment of vocal fold structure and function. We collaborate closely with local otolaryngologists (ENTs) to ensure comprehensive, medically coordinated care.

Videostroboscopy allows us to evaluate vocal fold vibration, closure patterns, mucosal wave, symmetry, and laryngeal tension in real time, ensuring treatment is precisely targeted to the underlying physiological impairment.

We provide evaluation and treatment for a wide range of voice and upper airway disorders, including:

  • Incomplete vocal fold closure or vocal fold bowing

  • Vocal fold paralysis or paresis

  • Muscle tension dysphonia

  • Vocal nodules and benign vocal fold lesions

  • Vocal process granulomas

  • Chronic laryngitis and voice overuse injuries

  • Chronic cough and throat clearing

  • Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) / inducible laryngeal obstruction

  • Upper airway disorders contributing to breathing or voice dysfunction

We treat many patients with chronic cough and complex upper airway conditions, addressing not only the voice but also the sensory, respiratory, and behavioral components contributing to symptoms.

Individualized, Evidence-Based Voice Rehabilitation

Following a comprehensive evaluation, your clinician develops a highly individualized treatment plan designed to restore efficient vocal fold vibration, reduce strain, and improve overall voice function.

Treatment may include:

  • Vocal Function Exercises (VFE) to strengthen and rebalance the laryngeal musculature

  • Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVTEs) to optimize vocal fold vibration and reduce phonatory effort

  • Resonant voice therapy techniques to improve efficiency and reduce strain

  • Laryngeal relaxation and tension-reduction strategies

  • Behavioral therapy for chronic cough and throat clearing

  • Respiratory retraining for paradoxical vocal fold motion and upper airway dysfunction

  • Education to reduce phonotraumatic behaviors and promote long-term vocal health

Home practice is often an essential component of recovery, with structured exercise programs tailored to your specific diagnosis. Periodic follow-up visits allow for progress monitoring and adjustment of the treatment plan. In some cases, repeat videostroboscopy is performed to objectively measure improvement and document treatment outcomes.

Parkinson’s Voice Therapy

All of our clinicians are certified in SPEAK OUT!®, an evidence-based program specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. This intensive voice program targets vocal intensity, clarity, and functional communication to improve everyday speech and overall quality of life.

At SNR, our approach to voice therapy goes beyond symptom management. We focus on restoring efficient vocal function, improving airway coordination, and empowering patients with tools to maintain long-term vocal health.
