Swallowing Rehabilitation
Swallowing Therapy (Dysphagia Treatment)
Difficulty swallowing can impact nutrition, hydration, respiratory health, and overall quality of life. At Swallowing and Neurological Rehabilitation (SNR), we specialize in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of dysphagia across a wide range of medical diagnoses.
Our clinicians provide advanced, evidence-based swallowing care for patients with neurological conditions, head and neck cancer, post-radiation fibrosis, neuromuscular disease, structural impairments, and medically complex presentations. We focus not only on safety, but also on restoring efficiency, comfort, and confidence with eating and drinking.
Comprehensive Swallowing Evaluation
Every patient begins with a thorough clinical assessment, including detailed cranial nerve examination, medical history review, and analysis of functional swallowing performance.
When indicated, we perform Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) to objectively assess swallowing physiology in real time. FEES allows us to visualize airway protection, residue patterns, timing of swallow initiation, and structural movement, enabling highly individualized treatment planning.
Our goal is to identify the specific physiological impairment contributing to swallowing difficulty, not simply manage symptoms.
Specialized, Evidence-Based Swallowing Rehabilitation
We offer comprehensive swallowing evaluation and treatment, including:
-
Thorough cranial nerve and clinical assessments
-
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) procedures to objectively assess swallowing physiology and develop individualized treatment recommendations
-
Individualized exercise programs targeting specific swallowing musculature to improve safety, strength, and efficiency
-
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy (Ampcare Effective Swallow Protocol) to re-educate swallowing muscles in conjunction with pharyngeal strengthening exercises or during functional swallowing tasks
-
Intensive therapy programs for patients with severe or chronic dysphagia
-
Myofascial release and manual therapy techniques for patients with fibrosis-related dysphagia (e.g., post-radiation scar tissue), muscle tension dysphagia, or dysphonia to restore mobility to connective tissue
-
Comprehensive head and neck lymphedema management, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression garment fitting and training, kinesiology taping, and other specialized manual approaches to reduce swelling and improve swallowing and airway function
-
Expiratory and inspiratory muscle strength training (EMST/IMST) to improve respiratory muscle performance, cough strength, and airway protection during swallowing
-
Education in individualized compensatory strategies and postural techniques, when appropriate, to immediately improve safety, efficiency, and quality of life in the presence of physiological impairments
Our Approach
Swallowing rehabilitation at SNR is never “one-size-fits-all.” Treatment plans are built around objective findings and tailored to each patient’s diagnosis, goals, and medical status. We emphasize:
-
Targeted physiologic strengthening
-
Restoration of functional oral intake when appropriate
-
Airway protection and pulmonary safety
-
Long-term management strategies for progressive conditions
-
Collaboration with physicians and multidisciplinary teams
For patients with chronic, complex, or progressive swallowing disorders, we provide structured programs designed to maximize function and maintain independence for as long as possible.
At SNR, we are committed to delivering specialized medical swallowing care grounded in evidence, precision, and compassion. Our goal is not only to improve swallowing safety, but to restore quality of life through confident, functional eating and drinking.
